Technical Schools

The NWFA's technical schools were developed to assist wood flooring professionals in advancing their skills and expertise in all aspects of wood flooring installation.

  • Jig & Staircase Workshop


    This 4-day school provides extensive hands-on training utilizing a variety of specialized tools, techniques and technology. Prerequisites include three years experience and previous attendance at an NWFA school. Topics include: Technique of Installing Stairs; Technique of Installing Handrails; Learn to Build and Use a Jig to Cut Taper Boards; Parquet and Medallions; and Making Your Own Jig to take home. Examples: Oval Jig, Sliver Jig, Taper Jig, Chop Saw Jig, Template Jig & others.

  • Wood Flooring Basics


    This 4-day school provides a comprehensive entry-level overview of the wood flooring industry. Students receive three NWFA degree credits. Topics include: Wood Properties; Job Site Preparation; Installation Techniques; Equipment Maintenance; Safety; Sanding/Finishing; Trouble Shooting; and Floating Floors.

  • Sub-Floor Preparation & Solid Glue Down - Concrete


    This 3-day school provides hands-on training for subfloor preparation on both concrete and wood, and gluedown installation on concrete. Students receive a moisture meter and three NWFA degree credits. Topics include: Subfloor leveling; Self-leveling Compounds; Vapor Barriers and Retarders; Solid Over Concrete; Adhesives; Radiant Heat; Sound Control; and Moisture Testing.

  • Intermediate Installation and Sand & Finish


    This 3-day school provides hands-on training for installation, sanding and finishing. The school is set up in modules. Students receive one NWFA degree credit per module and a moisture meter. You choose which day(s) to attend. 1ST DAY - INSTALLATION: Moisture Issues; Installation Techniques; and Borders & Inlays. 2ND DAY - SAND & FINISH: Sanding Techniques; Finishing Techniques; and Tool Maintenance. 3RD DAY - FINISH: Board Replacement; Repairing Finish;

  • Wood Flooring Inspection School


    Four-day school is designed to prepare wood flooring professionals to take the NWFACP Certified Inspector exam. Topics will include report forms, performance standards, moisture, grades, manufacturer-specific issues, sand & finish, installation, bond-fasteners, report writing, & expert witness. On day-five there is the option to take the NWFA CP Inspector Certification Test.


  • Wood Flooring Inspection School & Test


    Four-day school is designed to prepare wood flooring professionals to take the NWFACP Certified Inspector exam. Topics will include report forms, performance standards, moisture, grades, manufacturer-specific issues, sand & finish, installation, bond-fasteners, report writing, & expert witness. Day five the NWFACP Inspector Test. Test is a four-hour closed book written exam, as well as two take-home inspection scenarios. Reports written based on the scenarios are due 10 business days from test


  • Advanced Installation


    This 3-day school provides extensive hands-on training utilizing a variety of specialized tools, techniques and technologies. Prerequisties include three years experience and previous attendance at an NWFA school. Students receive a moisture meter and four NWFA degree credits. Topics include: Borders; Medallions and Inlays; Parquet; Mixed Media; Metal Inlay; Custom Job Estimating; Specialty Tools; and Sanding/Finishing Techniques.

  • Wood Flooring Commercial Inspection School


    This four-day school is designed to prepare wood flooring professional to take the NWFACP Certified Commercial Inspector exam. Topics will include concrete subfloors, wood subfloors, other subfloors (vinyl, ceramic, tile, marble, steel, terrazzo), moisture meters, moisture testing, leveling/preparation, moisture migration, commercial floors, installation methods, adhesives, protection and trade damage, architects/designers, maintenance, finishes, conduct, and report writing.

    This 5-day school provides hands-on training for highly experienced wood flooring professionals. Students will design and install a custom wood floor. Prerequisites include previous attendance at NWFA Advanced School. Students receive a moisture meter and four NWFA degree credits. Topics include: Building Custom Jigs; Cutting Taper Boards; Cutting Parquet/Medallions; Bending Wood; Installing on a Radius; Free-Hand Routing; Marquetry/Inlays; Stairs and Handrails; and Job Costing.

  • Expert Sand & Finish


    This 3-day school provides hands-on training for highly experienced wood flooring professionals. Prerequisites include three years industry experience and previous attendance at NWFA Custom Design and Finish School. Students receive a moisture meter and three NWFA degree credits. Topics include: Sanding/Finishing Stairs; Sanding/Finishing Custom Mixed Media; Hand Brushing/Rubbing/Rolling Finish; Faux Painting; Repair of Damaged Boards; Custom Mixing/Blending Stains; and Hand Scraping.
